Oh Boy! (or Girl) It’s Gender Reveal Time!

To see, or not to see — that is the question.

By the time mamas-to-be reach the 20-week mark, there’s a big decision to make. As long as baby isn’t feeling shy, a routine sonogram can let you know whether you’re expecting a girl or a boy.

For some parents, deciding to find out the gender is a no-brainer. After all, it’s one of the most common questions you encounter during pregnancy from friends, family and even complete strangers.

For others, not knowing is the perfect way to add some excitement and mystery to pregnancy. Odds are your loved ones will all have predictions. Finding out as a family on the big day can be a special moment you’ll never forget and give you something special to look forward to during those last few weeks of pregnancy.

How to Choose

So which route is right for you? There is no wrong answer.

If you are the kind of person who likes planning or hates surprises, finding out may alleviate some stress. Knowing the gender also gives your friends and family more options for baby shower gifts.

It’s important to do what feels right for your family. If you and your significant other disagree on the big reveal, consider having the ultrasound technician write the gender down on a piece of paper and seal it in an envelope in case one of you just has to peek before reaching the finish line. That’s a secret that may be very difficult to keep!

The Big Reveal

If you do decide to find out the gender of your future family member, a reveal party is a fun way to announce your findings to your loved ones. Have guests fill out a card with their guesses and put them in a box with a slit at the top. Tally up the votes and reveal whether your friends and family were right or wrong.

Another way to build suspense is to bake a cake that’s blue for a boy or pink for a girl. When you slice into it, your guests will “ooh” and “aah” at the news and get a tasty treat.

Other fun options include slipping a salesperson your unopened envelope, having him or her box up the appropriate colored balloons and then releasing them at the party so you can find out along with everyone else, filling a piñata with pink or blue items and letting the blindfolded mom-to-be whack it open, or pitting team blue against team pink in a scavenger hunt to find the answer.

Whether you decide to celebrate privately, with a group of your favorite people or on the day of your baby’s birth, one thing is certain. The moment you hear “It’s a girl!” or “It’s a boy!” your life will change forever.

As you approach the midpoint of your pregnancy, it’s time to start thinking about where you will deliver your little miracle. Having a baby is one of life’s most joyous experiences.
